ABOUT
St Margaret’s Bay Conservation Association: (SMBCA)
Conserving the beauty of the Bay for future generations
St. Margaret’s Bay has a rich and fascinating history. Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), it forms part of the Heritage Coast stretching from Dover to Kingsdown — a landscape recognised for its exceptional natural and cultural significance.
St. Margaret’s Bay Conservation Association (SMBCA) is a community-led organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing the unique architectural, historic, and environmental character of the Conservation Area (CA) that spans the Bay.
One of our key objectives is planning. Drawing on the extensive local knowledge and professional experience of residents, we regularly review local planning applications against council-approved CA appraisal guidelines. Thereafter, we provide informed feedback to the authorities responsible for planning the future of the Bay.
Transparency, collaboration, and community engagement are central to everything we do. We continue to adapt to the changing needs of the community while working to safeguard the character and environment of St. Margaret’s Bay for future generations.

TERMS OF REFERENCE
The SMBCA is guided to preserve and protect the intrinsic character of the St. Margaret’s Bay Conservation Area. The Bay has a fascinating history and resides within an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Whilst the Conservation Area contains only one listed building, the spaces between buildings, and the landscape between, are factors that gives the Bay its special significance.
CHARACTER APPRAISAL
The first task of the SMBCA was to facilitate the commissioning of a Character Appraisal. The purpose was to identify the significance of the heritage assets and define the character of the Conservation Area.
It aims to increase public awareness and involvement in the preservation of the
Area and provide a framework for planning decisions, to guide positive change and regeneration.
